Baseball, Apple Pie... ...Barbershop Harmony |
Barbershop harmony is a vocal music form born and nurtured in the USA. It is a 4-part blend, sung without accompaniment, which emerged from the sidewalk spontaneity of early America.
The words "barbershop harmony" traditionally evoke images of 4 men wearing striped blazers standing beside a barber's pole, singing sentimental songs. But ...
Barbershop is much more today! It is now a legitimate and highly stylized form of folk music, sung with great vocal control and compelling beauty. It is performed by both choruses and quartets, complete
with choreography and eye-catching costumes. The songs range from the old favorites you'd expect to familiar tunes of today. And to top it all off, women are now playing a starring role on the barbershop stage!!! |
Worldwide Appeal... |
From the streets of early America, barbershop singing has spread to all areas of the world. Sweet Adelines began with one small chapter in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1945 and has grown to a
membership of over 37,000 with chapters in 26 different countries. It blends a great diversity of women whose only bond is the creation of their special combination of enchanting harmony and extraordinary friendships. |
